Last weekend we had our good friend Van Mendoza stop by to shoot some video and photos for us. He did not disappoint. Check out some of the photos below! Video will be coming soon. All the photos can be found at www.vanmendoza.com
Last weekend we were in San Francisco competing at the BJJ Tour American Cup and so many came home with medals. Of the ten competitors we had, six walked away with gold medals and two with bronze. Jiu Jitsu is about learning and growing. Every day each of us work on our own techniques that need sharpening. We are happy to see the progress of everyone at the academy.
Here are a few photos of our competitors
The Pan American Championship was a 4 long day event with Milton Bastos competitors on each day. We came as a team and left as a team. Purple belts went first and there were no easy matches for our adult male division. Our students were able to fix their mistakes and are already looking ahead to the next two tournaments. Next were our blue belts who fought equally as hard; fighting until the finals and two ended up going home with gold and silver. We also had two amazing brown belts making their Pans debut. One lost in the quarter finals and the other took home bronze.
All of our students worked incredibly hard and showed so much heart in every single one of their fights. We are so proud of all the progress everyone is making. Back to the lab to correct our mistakes and we are all looking forward to the full competition schedule for the year.
Up next is Jiu Jitsu World League this weekend, followed quickly by BJJ TOUR American Cup just two weeks after that on April 8 and 9. IBJJF Worlds is soon after in June and then on to Master Worlds.
We are ready
We would like to welcome Scott to our team of awesome instructors. He is currently training under us in Jiu Jitsu, however he is ranked 5th in the United Stated in Judo and he is now our new Judo instructor. We will start with kids class on Friday's and increase classes to adults soon after! Happy to see progress and thank you Scott!
March 1 marked 15 days until the Pan American Championship. With 12 competitors from our academy going to Irvine to compete, the focus has been grooming and preparing them. We couldn't have done it without all the other students as well. They are coming day in and day out as our training partners with all the encouragement on our side. We are all in this together. The 7pm class was revamped (sorry to all the new students who were thrown into comp training). What used to be advanced technique class with ample drilling time was thrown aside and replaced with quick- 20 second speed drills with 4 reps each. Then 3-3-3 shark rolls, 10 minute rounds and 1 minute rounds as well on any given day. All of this was designed to help prepare us for multiple fights, strategic game play and endurance. This weekend is the last before we leave on Wednesday and I can confindently say that everyone is more than prepared. Our physical and mental mindset is there. Now it's just time to press PLAY
Pssst!! The word is out! We received a lovely email late last year that we had been awarded the Excellence in Small Business for Martial Arts in the city of Mountain View. We are beyond humbled. We want to thank every one of our students for their wonderful support and the grind, day in and out. This is a team effort and without the students, we wouldn't be here today. We now have the plaque to display in our academy! Please don't ever hesitate to stop by, swing by, come hang out or try a class with us... chances are, you'll end up staying for awhile
This past weekend our students fought at Rumble In The Redwoods and had great success! They were driven, methodical and precise. We had 10 students compete Five of them walked away with gold medals, and 4 students closed their divisions with gold and silver! Great job to everyone. This was a nice warm up before Pans!
Thanks for the group photo Eric!
We've been hard at work these last few months and keeping our second baby under wraps. But now she's here and ready for her debut. We'd like to introduce you all to MB Watsonville Jiu Jitsu and Kickboxing! We have adult and kids Jiu Jitsu, taught by Alé Nogueira who is a black belt from São Paulo with over 20 years of experience and training. We also offer adult kickboxing taught by George who is has 15 years of knowledge under his gloves and punching bags!
This last weekend we had our first open mat and opened our doors to the Jiu Jitsu community. They did not disappoint! We had great training and appreciated everyone who came to support us!
Thank you again!
In October we celebrated 2 years at our very first location. It's an amazing feeling to see each one of our students walk in daily and train with us. Life isn't easy and can often get in the way; and Jiu Jitsu can be one of the first extra curricular activities on the list of things to go when the going gets tough and cuts needs to be made. But you all have chosen to stick with it, stick with us and we've grown together. Many of the students we have today came as fresh white belts, and many are still walking through those doors and putting a gi on for the very first time. Without your interest and commitment to us, we wouldn't be where we are today. Thank you so much for helping contribute to our thriving academy!
We had the honor of hosting Ricardo "Franjinha" Miller for a two hour seminar last weekend as well before our celebration. He went over some super secret sick technique that students have already implemented into their games and are smashing everyone who didn't attend! Great job guys and thank you again Franjinha, for your patience, humor and knowledge.
Now, becauuuuse we were busy with classes and distracted by awesome techniques, we kind of neglected one area, which was actually promoting you guys! Here are some photos of all those awesome stripes and new belts! Congrats on all the hard work you've all put in!
Oh, and Milton received his second degree for his black belt. I mean, I guess that's something right? Six years as a black belt and having the honor of your professor come to your academy and promote you, congrats to you too Miltinho!

We are SO proud of all our students who signed up and competed this past weekend at Jiu Jitsu World Leauge! Everyone put it all out on the line and fought so well. All your hard work of training is paying off and it SHOWS! As a team, ARES BJJ came in second place for adult and masters gi. And on Sunday ARES BJJ came in first place! These are huge accomplishments for our young association that isn't even one year old yet. Thank you again, because without you guys, we wouldn't have anything
